African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) | The Kruger National Park | 3 Fascinating Facts
The African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) or the African sea eagle, is a large species of eagle found throughout sub-Saharan Africa wherever large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply occur. It is the national bird of Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The African fish eagle is a large bird. The female, at 3.2–3.6 kg (7.1–7.9 lb) is larger than the male, at 2.0–2.5 kg (4.4–5.5 lb). This is typical sexual dimorphism in birds of prey. Males usually have wingspans around 2.0 m (6.6 ft), while females have wingspans of 2.4 m (7.9 ft).
Fun Facts:
The African fish eagle is not a ‘true’ eagle but belongs to the Haliaeetus genus of sea eagles, alongside seven other species worldwide that include the American bald eagle and the Eurasian white-tailed eagle. This is one of the most ancient genera among all living birds. The genus Haliaeetus is older than primates!
African fish eagles are kleptoparasites, which is to say they habitually steal prey from other species. Common victims of this piratical behavior include goliath herons and saddle-billed stork.
A fish eagle’s toes are coated in sharp barbs, called spiricules, which consequently help it to grasp fish and other slippery prey.
Fish are not the only item on the menu of this versatile predator. In addition, other prey includes ducks, terrapins, crocodiles, small waterfowl and even – in the soda lakes of East Africa – flamingos.
Female African fish eagle calls are lower-pitched than the males. The breeding pairs of African fish eagles sing duets. This duet which happens generally at the start of the breeding season helps to facilitate a close sense of bonding between the pairs.
The African fish eagle has a speed of 20 mph (32 kph).
This bird has symbolic importance in Africa and is known as the ‘keeper of the waters’ and is often called ‘the voice of Africa.’ It is the national bird of three nations: Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Sudan.
