Maharashtra Political Crisis LIVE: In a big relief to the Shinde sena, the Supreme Court on Monday put an interim stay on disqualification proceedings against 16 out of the 40-odd rebel MLAs till July 11. These 16 MLAs had been served disqualification notices by the Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker for not attending a party meeting convened by Uddhav Thackeray earlier this week.
Sources within the rebel camp told India Today that after the apex court judgement, the mood in the camp has been high.
A meticulously planned operation, that many say has “BJP” written all over it, is now inching towards its penultimate stage - the bringing down of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra (the climax being the formation of a new government in coalition with the BJP).
To ensure that every step was closely guarded and there were no chinks in the ranks, India Today has learnt the mobile phones of all MLAs (barring that of the top few trusted lieutenants of Eknath Shinde) were switched off as soon as they landed in Guwahati. To compensate for the same, 16-17 new SIM cards were distributed among them, so they could stay in touch with their loved ones. It must be noted that many legislators are staying at the hotel along with their personal staff and some family members, who’ve travelled to the eastern city with them.
