Camp Newpaug - Set deeply into the Nassahegan State Forest, the long-abandoned building with bars across its windows is the last complete structure to survive from an era when part of rural Burlington was home to a federal "transients camp." It was once part of a massive federally run workhouse and shelter for homeless, out-of-work New England men. In the early years of the Great Depression, Camp Nepaug housed as many as 300 men who lived in a series of wooden barracks. News accounts of the time describe them mostly as "hobos," near-penniless drifters who crisscrossed the country as stowaways on freight trains.

The Helen Lohman House (Spiderweed Preserve) - The legend behind Spiderweed is that Lohman named her property to reflect the sad state she found her gardens in each spring.
Those gardens are now gone, taken over by the New England forest. Her house, made of native stone taken when the fields were tilled, sits abandoned with broken windows. Outside the front door, piles of coal mix in with the ever-encroaching forest. Although a "Danger! Keep Out!" sign adorns the front door, peering inside the musty house, one can imagine the warmth that once inhabited the old farm home.
Just down the trail from the stone house is an overlook that gives the hiker a breathtaking view of the Connecticut River Valley. Formed from a pegmatite intrusion, the view must have been spectacular during a clear day.
