Learning to both expertly perform and perfectly include just one single guitar lick into a musical part can sometimes be all that you need to sound great on guitar. Today, we’re going to have some fun with this idea, and at the same time help out all the beginner and intermediate players who want to add this performance technique into their playing style.

This lesson will focus on a guitar lick that will help you sound great on guitar. And, to take this concept to the next level, we’ll learn it in 2 fret positions.

For beginners, we’ll focus on the open position. For the Intermediate players out there, I’ve also set up this lick in the fifth position.

The featured lick in this lesson is not just easy to play, but it’s also easy to add into a chord progression. Once it is fully developed, it will help provide a great “stand alone” sound across the chord progressions harmony.

The lick is in the key of “D” and it applies notes of “D” Major scale. We’re going to learn the lick in open position at first, then integrate it across the chord changes of a “D Major” I-IV-V progression with the chords of; “D, G and A.”

After that, we’ll take the lick up the neck and to learn it again, in the mid-range position of 5th. Along with the new 5th position version of our lick we will also include some new chord patterns for that neck region as well.
