Engineered or Enhanced Geothermal Systems, or EGS refers to a set of concepts that utilize rock stimulation or fracturing techniques to increase the amount of permeability in rock. EGS, along with Closed Loop Systems, are typically referred to as “scalable” or “hot dry rock” geothermal, because the techniques if perfected, could scale and feasibly allow geothermal energy to be produced anywhere in the world. Concepts can involve single or double well systems, and cutting edge designs incorporate directional drilling and multi-stage fracturing techniques from the oil and gas industry in the quest to reduce cost and increase efficiency and output. What are the technological challenges associated with EGS, and what technologies and methodologies can be deployed from oil and gas to help drive down cost? What are the risks associated with these systems, and how can they be mitigated? What EGS projects in development should be on the radar? Let’s explore.
