Presenting today’s feature in our #whyImahj series: Lauren Beresner Kesten Brought to you by the Facebook group Mahjong Community and Mahjong Dice
When I was seven years old....that was my first recollection of my mother playing mah-jongg. Every Monday afternoon she would have girlfriends over to play and I’ll always remember the little green glass bowls filled with nuts and candy, and in the kitchen would be those same little green bowls filled with tuna and egg salad. My mother would let me watch while they played, and I always thought it was so fun to see her and her friends play when I got home from school. The ladies would always alert the bus driver to drop off all the kids at the house where the game was that week, so no one would have to go home to meet the bus. Instant play date while the moms Mahjed.
Flash forward 30 years and I’m living in Connecticut with a seven-year-old daughter. There was a group in my town who played. They really wanted me to join them. The rabbis wife came over with her mah-jongg set and she sat down at my kitchen table and she showed me the tiles. She told me that I would be joining them on Thursday to observe the game. I went on Thursday morning. She sat me down at the table and, shadowing me, helped me form my hand. That was my first mah-jongg!
I’ve never looked back, and I’ve made the most amazing friends through Mahjongg, in so many different places. I love playing in tournaments - it’s such a thrill.
While not related to mahjong, we know there are many dog and cat lovers in the mahjong world. While working for NBC, every year we have a Clear the Shelter event. This video was part of a campaign “Partners in a Caring Community.”
A funny mahjong connection: While I was an extra on the set of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I met Erica Marcus. Later, at a tournament in Dix Hills, New York, I thought she looked familiar and we realized we met at the filming.
This game brings me so much joy as I hope it does to others. I taught my daughter how to play when she was twelve. Amazing how life comes full circle.
We wanted to thank Lauren for her time. We hope you enjoyed learning why she plays mahjong. Why do you play? If you or someone you know would like to be featured on our #whyImahj or #menthatmahj series, please Email us at modernmahjong@gmail.com
