Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He was the seventh and last child of Samuel and Nancy Edison. When he was seven, his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan. Edison was a bright boy and was always inventing things. He was also very curious. When he was twelve, he started working as a newsboy and then as a telegraph operator.
In 1876, Edison invented the phonograph. This was a machine that could record and play back sound. Edison also invented the light bulb. He began working on this in 1878 and finally perfected it in 1879.
Edison continued to invent things throughout his life. He set up a factory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he and his workers developed many new products. In 1887, Edison invented the kinetoscope. This was a machine that could show moving pictures.
Edison died in 1931. He was 84 years old.
