A large landfill in Rizal, Philippines, is overflowing with plastic waste, highlighting the country’s plastic crisis. This issue is particularly significant for marginalized communities, such as that of Gemma Gerolaga, a Manila resident who relies on inexpensive plastic sachets for everyday essentials. The small, single-use packages, which contain products like coffee, shampoo, and toothpaste, are not only convenient but also the most affordable option for people with limited incomes.
Gemma and her family contribute to the growing pile of plastic waste each day, collecting sachets from their consumption and the goods sold at her home-based store. Despite the harm these sachets cause to the environment, including pollution and flooding, the affordability of these products leaves many Filipinos with little choice.
As global negotiators meet in South Korea to discuss a potential treaty on plastics, the issue looms large for low-income communities who depend on sachets. Gerolaga’s experience reflects the tension between environmental concerns and the economic realities of daily life for the country’s marginalized populations.
