In the late 1700s, the Irish Rebellion of 1798 was influenced by a revamped rebel group structure. In May 1795, delegates from Irish counties established a hierarchy in local societies spreading through Ulster and beyond. This involved diverse individuals, including artisans and farmers, who chose independence over sectarianism. They followed a pledge initiated by William Drennan.
This was not without precedent, with other groups such as the Whiteboys expressing agrarian grievances and challenging religious intolerance. The 1790s saw the rise of the Defender groups, mainly Catholic, which aimed for a shared vision of freedom beyond their sectarian resource conflicts.
Leaders like Lord Edward FitzGerald and Arthur O'Connor helped to energize the United Irishmen. Disarmament efforts and inconsistent French aid did not deter them. By February 1798, nearly 270,000 United Irishmen had been mustered, setting the stage for the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
