Prime Minister Winston Churchill addresses Conservative / Tory Party Conference in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.



L/S of members applauding as Churchill rises. M/S of Churchill making speech (natural sound). He says that twelve years have passed since, in the crisis of the war, he was chosen leader of the Conservative Party, but this is the first time he has had the honour to address the annual conference as Prime Minister. He says "they tell us... that we have broken our promises, well that can only be proved by time. It would be more true to say that the Socialist predictions of the General Election have already, in many cases, been falsified."



He talks of the "explosion of feeling in our party" two years ago at their conference, in favour of a target of 300,000 houses a year. He says the Socialists were crying "Do you really think that if Aneurin Bevan can only build 200,000 houses in a year that there is any other statesman in the world who could surpass him?" (laughs and applause). He talks of "the hundreds of thousands of young couples who seek a home with its own front door where they can rear a family of valiant Britons" having more hope in Harold Macmillan, Marples, Mr Eccles and Lord Swinton than in the "ambitious demagogue who calls one half of his fellow countrymen vermin".



He goes on to speak of the Trade Union being misled by "the undoubted fallacy of Socialism" and showing an undue bias towards the Socialist Party. He says at least one third of Trade Union members vote Conservative.
