For the fifth year in the last six my wife and I joined her Mum and her Nana away to a caravan near Filey in North Yorkshire for a week in July, this year as a party of 5 with our 9 month old son experiencing a caravan holiday for the first time. Each previous year I have managed to see some of the regular 'Scarborough Spa Expresses' and fit in a couple of visits to the NYMR, this year like last was a combination of both!
Monday's is Market Day in Pickering and the high street is given over to various stalls. We had a nice morning browsing the stalls and the 'flea market' before an afternoon in the garden of the cafe by the river just south of the station. This allowed me to film the 12pm, 2pm and 4pm departures and their respective arrivals. The 12pm was in the hands of Black 5 no.44806 (not 80136 as listed), the 2pm does not feature as Std 4 no.76079 failed at Grosmont and was substituted for a diesel and finally the 4pm was in the hands of Std 4 no.80136.
Then on Thursday 20th July it was the weekly 'Scarborough Spa Express' which runs diesel hauled from Carnforth to York with alternate pick ups each week then steam hauled from York to Scarborough and return. Jubilee no.45699 'Galatea' has been based at York for the summer and was once again in charge. We first see it pass the site of the former Weaverthorpe Station which still has a manned signal box, semaphore signals and manual crossing barriers but none are really captured well due to the torrential rain! Finally its Scarborough Station and some close ups of 45699 before the departure is seen using two cameras. Apologies for the poor quality of sound at Scarborough, the lead connecting my microphone to the camcorder had come out slightly at the microphone end so all sound is from my 2nd camera, thankfully I had 7 minutes of sound before, during and after so it is the correct sound just poorer quality!
