Beginning in October 2020, Californians will need to have their driver's licenses updated to the so-called Real ID in order to use their California driver's license as a means of identification at airports and some other secured federal locations like military bases. The California DMV is offering drivers a chance to get ahead of the federal government's deadline now. However, the acting chief of the DMV said there is no need to rush.
