Short clip to help new drivers driving over to Milford Sound know what to expect during the drive.
--------------------
This was the Homer Tunnel drive - amazing history behind the tunnel (google it!), and an even more impressive drive down the highway.
Total drive time from Te Anau to Milford is officially listed as ~1 hour 45 minutes, but I took close to 3.5 hours because I stopped to do short walks, take photographs and just be awestruck by the beauty of New Zealand.
For new drivers driving to Milford Sound, buffer more time so that you don't miss out on the amazing views!
I drove a Britz Ventura Plus campervan in, and contrary to what some people say, the drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound was NOT difficult at all.
Some helpful tips for new drivers:
1. Pull over and let faster vehicles cross - you don't get pressured to speed up, and you're also being courteous!
2. There's absolutely no cell phone reception the minute you hit the high way (sporadic reception for the first 5-10km or so, but it's nil after that), so make sure you have a hard copy map to know where to stop !
3. There are no petrol stations from Te Anau to Milford Sound, so do fill up your tank before!
4. If you're driving through lunch time, bring food along and have a picnic at ANY of the beautiful spots - you will not regret this at all
5. There is internet connection at Milford Sound, but it's NZ$20 for 1gb worth of data, and it is extremely, extremely slow.
6. Try not to do the drive during peak hours, as there are narrow segments of the highway, and MANY speeding tour buses returning from Milford Sound to Te Anau
7. Pio Pio Cafe at Milford Sound serves really good food
ENJOY THE DRIVE!
