Moonan Brook, a tributary to the Hunter River, has been dry for weeks. But that all changed suddenly this week, when heavy rainfall sent water surging down its channel.
Some locals lined the banks of the brook to catch the surge of floodwater, known locally as a “gully scraper”. Among them was Fiona Coddington, whose video captures the anticipation, and then the raging water carrying debris along with it.
The Newcastle Herald said the creek had been dry for six weeks before some 150 mm of rain in Barrington Tops restored water.
Referencing the chronic drought being experienced locally, Coddington told the Herald: “It has been horrid. It is still dry, except for the brook, which is a better than nothing.”
