You select the planes. You select the mission, with no airzone.
NOTE: After realizing that carrier planes lose their mission while in base, this can be bothersome if your carriers are on strike force. In that case, you would have to switch on Naval Strike mid-battle. However, if you are in the situation where your deathstack is reinforcing a naval battle, common in multiplayer, this is merely just an extra step of micro - annoying, yet not broken.
There's a lot of buzz and criticism going around that Paradox broke carriers with the new By Blood Alone expansion, brought to a head by a video by@71Cloak. I love his videos, but he missed this through his testing, and now we have a bunch of posts on Reddit and forums decrying Paradox and making 'fixed' mods for something that isn't broken, instead of for stuff that is actually broken.
Having to micro them once is rather annoying, and hopefully will be fixed in a future patch, but hardly meriting the declaration and propagation that carriers are dead; instead, they're just as bad as they used to be.
