Here's how to fish for burbot from shore.
1. When can I catch a burbot from shore?
You can catch them in late fall and early winter in the harbors of the Great Lakes.
2. What gear should I use. Use a 7 foot or longer fishing rod. Medium Action. Choose a reel that can hold a lot of line. I suggest 10 pound braid and a 10 pound mono or fluorocarbon leader.
3. How do I rig up my line?
Put on a no roll sinker, then a bead to protect your knot. Next up is a swivel or snap swivel. Then your leader and a hook. I suggest a #2 or #4 bait holder hook.
4. What other gear will I need.
A big net with a long handle. A headlamp or flashlight. Warm clothes. Pliers.
5. Where do I fish?
Cast into the deepest water. Reel in your line so there is no slack and wait for a bite.
6. What do I do if I get a bite?
SET THE HOOK.
7. What time of day is best for fishing for burbot?
Fish for them in the evening or night.
8. How do I handle a burbot when I catch one?
You can grab them by the lip. They are really slimy. If you keep them, they are really tasty. They are related to cod. Make sure you know the regulations if you are keeping burbot to eat.
