Brazil: BYD Factory Site Shut As Chinese Workers Found in "Slave" Conditions | Firstpost America
Authorities in Brazil have halted the construction of a factory for the Chinese electric vehicle giant, Build Your Dreams (BYD). Officials rescued more than 160 Chinese nationals living in the factory in "slave-like" conditions. The incident took place in Brazil's northeastern state of Bahia, where BYD has been building its first electric vehicle plant outside Asia. According to authorities, the workers were forced to labour for excessive hours, sometimes for seven consecutive days. They were forced to sleep on beds without mattresses and the bathrooms lacked toilet paper and water. More than 100 workers had their passports and salaries withheld and had to get permission to leave the facility. BYD said it does not tolerate the disrespect of Brazilian law and human dignity.
