Photosynthesis can be described as a process that allows some living organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy, which is used to synthesize organic compounds. Photosynthesis directly supports plants, algae, and some prokaryotes, and also indirectly sustains most of life in the biosphere (setting aside the minor contribution from chemoautotrophic bacteria) by providing organic matter, food, and oxygen.
