Little process video of what's involved in creating a handspun scrap yarn. Starts with a bag of scraps sent from the client which I process and cut into the right sizes. This is a bag of fabric scraps from a lovely designer but can used any materials, particularly popular with weavers offcuts. This is a great closed loop recycling service making sure nothing goes to waste!
Next stage, I blend the scraps with a base fibre using my Ashford wild carder. This carder is designed for art yarn so it can take all the scraps and bulky bits to create interesting batts. I make a sandwich of fibre, popping the scraps inside to keep them from getting lost. Here I'm using a blend of cotton/bamboo and seacell fibre as this was a yarn designed for a customer with vegan requirements.
Next the spinning! The scraps sort of dictate how thick/thin this is spun, I like how unpredictable it can be. I try to make sure the scraps don't get lost on the inside, stopping when needed to pull the bits to the outside to make all the scruggy textures stand out.
I spin 2 bobbins then ply them together to produce a unique scrap yarn. Want one? Visit www.hannspun.com for details.
