Scene Summary
Hal Jordan is a Green Lantern, a member of an intergalactic peacekeeping force who use powerful rings to create constructs out of pure willpower. Hal's hometown of Coast City was destroyed by the villainous Mongul, causing him to fall into a deep depression.
Following the destruction, Hal discovers that the Guardians of the Universe, the beings who created the Green Lantern Corps, are unwilling to use their power to rebuild Coast City. Hal begins to unravel, feeling betrayed and abandoned, and eventually decides to take matters into his own hands.
He travels to Oa, the Green Lantern Corps' homeworld, and uses his ring to overpower and defeat the other Green Lanterns, stealing their power and becoming the villainous Parallax.
