(c)1994 National Football League; NBC Sports -- NBC Universal/Comcast
Here is the intro for the first 45 minutes or so (after a brief snippet of the 1993 AFC Championship between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs) of NBC's pre-game coverage of Super Bowl XXVIII pitting the defending champion Dallas Cowboys and a Buffalo Bills team hoping to avoid the dubious distinction of being the first team in the history of professional sports to lose 4 consecutive times.
PERSONNEL:
Host: Jim Lampley
Analysts: Joe Gibbs, Mike Ditka
Reporters: O.J. Simpson (Bills; who'd have guessed within 6 months he would become a murder suspect); Will McDonough (Cowboys); Todd Christensen (roving)
STORIES:
1. Preview of segments (a recap of 25th anniversary of Super Bowl III; interview with several Minnesota Vikings; O.J. Simpson interviewing Leon Lett; Bruce Smith {having suffered a loss in the family}; Bob Costas interviewing Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson {at that point feuding over credit for Dallas' turnaround - you probably know how this story ended} and Computer Bowl II)
2. Mike and Joe share their experiences as Super Bowl coaches
3. Jim tosses to O.J. Simpson (when I uploaded this segment on previous accounts WVECSpirit and Market42Fan I titled the segment "Before the White Bronco"); who discusses the Georgia Dome turf, followed by an interview with head coach Marv Levy (who notes the Bills were largely healthy save for linebacker Richard Harvey and cornerback James Williams, who were apparently a game-time decision); Will McDonough then interviews Jimmy Johnson (about injuries to Charles Haley {back} and Emmitt Smith {shoulder injury suffered in season-finale vs. New York Giants. Note the concussion suffered the previous week by Troy Aikman was not mentioned} and keys to the game), then brings up the field preparation (a darker green border by the sideline along with the sideline being shampooed a whiter shade of white to assist the officials). Finally, Todd Christensen interviews San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young and Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon (whose teams had played on Christmas in what was thought to be a Super Bowl preview)
4. Recap of Super Bowl III (featuring NBC footage of the iconic upset with interviews and footage of Joe Namath, Don Shula, Weeb Ewbank, Curt Gowdy and Johnny Unitas)
5. Casual Fan Commentary (Bill Cosby; I originally planned to put this on the previous HamptonRoadsTVFan channel LONG before the current Bill Cosby scandal. This makes at least two people involved in NBC's coverage that fell into scandal {Cosby, O.J., three if you count a 2007 domestic violence accusation of Lampley by his then-fiance that was eventually dropped})
6. NFL Experience (at Atlanta's World Congress Center; featuring Cris Collinsworth, Paul Maguire and Kansas City Chiefs running back Marcus Allen)
7. Mike and Joe talk about how they handled Super Bowl pressure
8. NFL Youth Education Town (Mary Ann Grabavoy report featuring interviews with former Raider safety Mike Davis {who ran the YET started in Los Angeles before the previous Super Bowl}; NFL president Neil Austrian and Jesse Jackson)
9. Partial clip of Stevie Wonder performing "Take the Time Out" (used for American Express' "Charge Against Hunger" campaign)
10. Jim Lampley (after explaining what a bumper is, using as an example Leon Lett's tease of an interview with O.J.) tosses to the Juice; who then presents a series of NFL Live! bumper bloopers
11. O.J.'s interview with Leon Lett (which covers Lett's showboating before the previous Super Bowl only for Don Beebe to knock the football out just before he got in the end zone and Lett's attempt to recover a blocked field goal with seconds left in Dallas' Thanksgiving game vs. Miami backfiring and leading to the Dolphins winning on a chip-shot field goal). O.J. then closes by mentioning Leon had gotten "cold feet" before the interview was originally scheduled and didn't show up (in hindsight, not a good idea knowing what we know now about Simpson)
15. Jim makes a brief reference to the controversy surrounding Georgia's state flag (which at the time included the Confederate flag in its design); noting that several reporters had threatened to walk out of the National Anthem as a symbolic protest
