STORYLINE:
Italian rescuers on Friday continued the slow process of recovering bodies from the wreckage of a school complex in San Giuliano di Puglia, which was hit by an earthquake the previous day.
At least 27 people were killed - all but three of them were children, firefighters said.
One rescue worker said most of the dead children were crushed at their desks as the roof crashed down upon them.
The tremor made the school classrooms collapse entirely, trapping the 56 children, their teachers and two janitors inside as they celebrated Halloween.
Children who had been in the school told Italian television that older students from the village had joined the youngsters on Thursday to teach them about Halloween.
While dozens of children were in the schoolhouse at the time of the quake, others had moved out to the garden for the Halloween festivities, perhaps saving lives, news reports said.
The school complex had nursery, elementary and middle school students.
As hopes for finding anyone still alive were fading, rescuers used cranes, sledgehammers, blow torches and their bare hands to reach for possible survivors under the rubble.
Sniffer dogs were brought in to help with the search.
The bodies of the dead were being housed in a makeshift morgue at the town's sports centre, where family members went to identify the dead.
The 5.4-magnitude quake hit the Campobasso area northeast of Naples in the Molise region at 11:33 a.m. (1233 GMT) on Thursday.
San Giuliano di Puglia, a village of about 1,195 people, was the hardest hit, with several buildings, including the school, damaged.
