The Game Awards seems to be trying to appeal to a broader audience by trying to mimic the prestige of the Oscars instead of embracing the hardcore gaming audience.
The West is completely lacking in any presence at these awards when it come to Game of the year, minus Balatro which isn't even from a western studio but rather a solo developer. Corporatization and DEI Initiatives are holding the west back because they're too focused on squeezing out every dime and pushing diversity rather than focusing on making quality games.
You also have a DLC nominated in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree which is silly considering Elden Ring already won GOTY in 2022. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a remake so it's also a weird choice. Black Myth Wukong had great production value but pretty shallow combat and Metaphor Refantazio's story is beyond stupid. I haven't played Astro Bot so there isn't much to say there.
2024 was a terrible year for gaming but it's a bit suspicious that some of the games that sold and reviewed the best didn't make the cut. Stellar Blade, Space Marines 2, Palworld, and Helldivers 2 all missed the cut for Game of the Year.
