Understanding and supporting children's reading engagement is essential to enhance the quality and quantity of their reading experiences and outcomes. Indeed, reading engagement improves children's language and literacy skills, and develops their knowledge and understanding of the world, themselves and others. In this online webinar, Professor McGeown will begin by discussing the multidimensional nature of reading engagement, exploring behavioural, cognitive, affective and social dimensions. Dr Kuzmicova will then expand common notions of reading engagement, which typically relate primarily to fiction, by discussing some of the distinctive characteristics of children’s engagement with nonfiction and other information texts in their everyday lives.
