Some tips on choosing the correct size bottom bracket when installing a replacement. I generally like to upgrade to a sealed bearing cartridge unit over an adjustable caged bearing type for better durability and much less maintenance.
The 4 sided tapered bottom bracket spindles come in a variety of widths depending on the bike type and number of front chainrings, so it's important to measure the old one if you're doing this type of swap.
I made this video to address a question a viewer asked on why his front derailleur wouldn't shift after installing a new bottom bracket.
In the case of the bike used in this demonstration, a narrower BB worked out better, but without adjusting the front derailleur, the bike wouldn't shift to the smallest ring, and would have potentially thrown the chain over the high side of the big ring.
