Making an old school boom bap beat on the Roland SP-404MKII: MFX, Chopping, Pattern Sequencer, Pattern Chain...etc...t ' s latest pack "Hip-hop Drums Vol.1", exactly the sort of thing I like to play with: [ Ссылка ]

The main sample I'm using, "Sample A", I pitch up (vinyl mode) then process with MFX in two different ways...
- A.1 (stereo): Cassette Sim & 404 Vinyl Sim to thin it out (filter out the bass) n dirty it up with some personality.
- A.2 (mono): using pan I set it to mono (left channel only), Super Filter & Warm Saturator to low pass filter so it's just the bass.
After resampling them both with their MFX I Pad Link them together, add the Compressor n resample that to a new pad.
The sample I chop into 8 segments and assign it to the empty pads above the drums.
I set the Attack & Release Envelopes to 1 on all the chops, add them to a Mute Group and turn off Gate.
"Sample B" is pitched up (vinyl mode off!) to match Sample A then time stretched to match roughly the bpm I'm going to make the beat. I resample it with Isolator (remove the lows, boost the highs) and 404 Vinyl Sim (dirty up slightly n add Wow Flut).
Vocal Chops...I don't do anything with them...although off camera, just before I performed the beat at the end I did pan the two "freak freak" chops slightly apart (one left, one right).
Pattern Sequencer: 4 Bars at 93 BPM. One of the best things the sp404 mk2 does is setting the "count in" to "wait", the click plays and whenever you start playing it start recording so the 1st beat is ALWAYS tight. So good. I have quantize set to 4, keep an eye on the top right corner of the screen to see when it's on or off (Grid = 100% or 0%). More or less the "on the beat" stuff is quantized and the "between" stuff is free. I really like that sort of swing you can get from that, it's human but solid af.
I wasn't paying attention and started recording the vocal chops halfway thru the pattern...didn't notice until editing the video...kept it that way coz...well that's just how the cards fell n it grew on me. The "yo" I record using 16 Levels.
Effect Setting: Bus 1 & 2 set to parallel, you'll notice that the sample pads are lit ORANGE and the drums GREEN, this is so when I'm performing the effects only touch the samples and leave the drums alone.
- Bus 3: Cassette Sim
- Bus 4: Compressor
This is my subtle glue preset, it dirties it up and compresses it slightly but doesn't crush the life out of it...didn't feel like that sort of joint.
That's about that...I chain the pattern variations together n jam on the beat...
