About The 1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS Cailfornia Special
The California Special was an equipment package inspired by the look of the Shelby GT350. It was produced in 1968 at the behest of the California Ford dealers who together accounted for about 20% of national Mustang sales.
The package included fiberglass quarter panel extensions, deck lid spoiler, and rear valence panel, fog lamps, louvered hood, exposed door locks, body-side and decklid stripes, and a pop-open gas cap.
Kevin Marti has a license agreement with the Ford Motor Company to manage a database containing all of the company’s U.S. vehicle-production information from 1967 to 2014. The ‘Marti’ report shows this Mustang to be a ‘One of One’. In 1968 there were 317,423 Mustangs produced. 4,118 of those were GT/CS California Specials. Only 215 of those came with the 390ci engines. There were two 428ci, and no 427’s with this package. All the rest were small block V8s and inline 6s Of the 215 390ci, 111 of them had the 4sp manual gearbox. Of those 111, only one of them - this car - was painted in Sea Foam Green. Marti was the person brought in to authenticate the ‘Bullitt’ movie car, which was also a 1968 Mustang 390 GT., though it was a fastback.
This is a 55k mile Alberta car that was treated to a cost-no-object concours restoration from Cars by Nisbet (body/paint/interior) and Ford/Shelby specialist Dale Adams (Mechanicals).
