I have heard many say that you cannot make money raising chickens, or that you don't even save money on eggs raising your own. I have found you can make some money on chickens and pay for the feed to get thousands of eggs. My plan includes buying chickens in early winter, say November or December. Raise these chicks for six months, until their point of production. (when they are laying) At this point the hens are at the most valuable point in their life. All their production is ahead of them. The cost of feeding them and the risk of losing them is behind them. I sold these hens at $25 a piece. The money I received selling these 24 birds paid for the cost of the chicks all the feed and a few hundred dollars to spare. I encourage you to get a variety of good laying hens that customers would like. I did four types. My favorite is the barred rock for its calm demeaner. I also got ameraucana, white leg horn, and Rhode Island red.
