A five judge bench of the Supreme court on Wednesday upheld the legal validity of Section 6 A of the Citizenship Act, which allowed for Citizenship to be granted to immigrants from East Pakistan/Bangladesh who had entered Assam prior to 1971. The bench has held that those who entered before 1 January 1966 would be deemed citizens, while those who entered between 1966 and 24 March 1971 can apply for citizenship. Additionally the Court has also noted that the mechanism to identify and deport "illegal immigrants" must work properly and cannot be left to whims of the administration.
India Today's Aneesha Mathur spoke to senior lawyers Salman Khurshid, Sanjay Hegde and Vijay Hansaria, who appeared for various petitioners on the various nuances of the Verdict and it's impact on Assam population and politics.
