CNBC's Contessa Brewer reports from Brooklyn, N.Y. on the reopening of the largest city in the U.S.
New York City will move into phase one of the state’s reopening plan, allowing nonessential retailers to partially reopen and much of the construction and manufacturing industries to resume.
Up to 400,000 New Yorkers are expected to return to work, Mayor Bill de Blasio has said.
The city’s steps toward reopening mark a turning point in the country’s fight against the coronavirus, which ravaged New York City and the surrounding region but has since spread to other states across the country.
The virus has infected more than 203,819 people in New York City and killed at least 21,844 people, according to the city’s health department. That means the city accounts for about 20% of all Covid-19 deaths in the U.S.
