On March 22, 2023, a ship tips over at Leith dry dock, causing injuries to 21 people who were subsequently transported to a hospital. An additional 12 individuals received treatment at the scene. Emergency services, including police, ambulances, and fire crews, were dispatched to the incident in Edinburgh, Scotland, after the 76m (250ft) research vessel RV PETREL became dislodged from its holding due to strong winds. The ship was previously owned by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen but is no longer under his estate’s ownership. The Leith councillor, Adam McVey, described the incident as “terrifying” for those aboard. According to Met Office data, wind speeds of 38mph (61km/h) were recorded in Edinburgh at 8am on Wednesday, with a gust of 44mph recorded at 9am. Five ambulances, an air ambulance, three trauma teams, and other resources were deployed to the scene to assist those affected.
