Dr. Marx: Folks often want to know what the recovery after rotator cuff surgery looks like, and unfortunately, it's a little bit slow going. Immediately after surgery, we have you hooked up in a sling. For me that's anywhere from four to six weeks to allow that tendon to start healing. After that, all we're interested in is your range of motion getting you to reach up overhead back behind your back again, simple things. Around that three month mark, that tendon has healed enough that we can start to stress it a little bit more. And so we started some more strengthening type exercises, get everything back that's atrophied over the previous few months while you've been sitting in the sling. And then finally, it's getting back to your daily tasks, what it might be for your work if it requires lifting, pushing, pulling, or things that you'd like to do around the house and typically that's somewhere between four and six months in total.
