STORYLINE:
A hospital spokesman said on Tuesday that a gunman who shot himself after a killing spree at a trade school in western Finland has died from his injures.
Tampere hospital medical director Matti Lehto said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital hours after the shooting.
Earlier, Finnish authorities said a man opened fire at the school on Tuesday, killing nine people before shooting himself.
It's Finland's second school massacre in less than a year.
Interior Minister Anne Holmlund said the gunman had been questioned by police just one day before Tuesday's attack, about YouTube postings in which he's seen firing a handgun.
She said he was released because authorities had no legal grounds to hold him.
Minister Holmlund said the man used a 22-millimetre calibre handgun in attack in Kauhajoki, 180 miles (300 kilometres) northwest of Helsinki, adding that he got the license for the gun in August.
Finnish tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported that police identified the gunman as Matti Juhani Saari, a 22-year-old student.
Authorities would only confirm that he was a student at the school, born in 1986.
Witnesses said panic broke out as the hooded gunman entered the school and began firing in a classroom where students were taking an exam.
Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and declared Wednesday a day of mourning with flags to be flown at half-mast.
