스웨덴, 덴마크 모더나 접종 중지... 게속 맞아도 괜찮을 까?
A number of countries have halted... the use... of MODERNA vaccines... for certain age groups... amid... concerns... over possible heart conditions.
For more... I have Choi Won-jong .
Won-jong... welcome.
Thanks for having me.
So which countries... are... we... speaking about?
Mostly from European countries right now,... for instance,... Sweden has stopped administering the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to younger men... ages 30 and under.
The reason was due to the risk of heart inflammation, such as myocarditis and pericarditis.
With similar concerns over side effects,... Denmark has decided not to give the Moderna jab to anyone under the age of 18.
Recently, Finland also stopped giving Moderna shot to those under 30.
Norway is yet to make its own decision about the Moderna vaccine,... but has urged men under 30 to get a Pfizer shot instead.
And... how are authorities here... responding... to this halt... in the use of Moderna vaccines?
So.. the government has also mentioned the risk of heart inflammation from mRNA vaccines,... but so far,... younger people under 50... have still been getting their Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
I believe teenagers in South Korea will also get mRNA vaccine as well.
Now... Won-jong... do tell us... a bit more... about the POTENTIAL heart conditions... following COVID-19 inoculation.
Good question. There are two major heart inflammation disorders.
They are... Myocarditis or Pericarditis.
Pericarditis... is the inflammation of the outer part of the heart... and Myocarditis is the inflammation of the heart muscle.
The common symptoms in both cases... are severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, and abnormal heartbeats.
And... what is the general stance... within medical circles... about... these m-RNA vaccines... Won-Jong?
Are they safe?
That was my question to some experts I talked to.
According to the U.S. CDC, around 4-point-1 people out of every million vaccinated... have experienced rare heart inflammation.
The expert I talked to over the phone... said these heart conditions... usually go away... without the need for specialized treatment.
Let's take a listen to what he said.
"Pericarditis usually gets better by itself within one to two weeks, but still chest pain is a problem. It's not a dangerous disease but people can feel uncomfortable... which can be treatable by medicine. Myocarditis improves after a certain period of time, but you need to be more careful with this one."
He also said the benefits of vaccination still outweigh the risk of side effects,... stressing that there is a much higher chance of having heart problems if you catch COVID-19.
The vaccination not only stops this from happening... but prevents other serious complications from COVID-19.
Right.
Meanwhile... expecting mothers can sign up... for COVID-19 inoculation... starting today?
Yes, starting today,... Friday here,... around 136-thousand pregnant women in Korea will now be able to book their shots.
Bookings can be made through the KDCA website... where individuals are required to submit... information about their pregnancy.
Actual vaccinations... will kick off on October 18th,... less than two weeks from now.
They will be getting either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
As you know, this has been a very sensitive issue... due to the risks of possible side effects.
BUT health authorities have continued to urge pregnant women to get jabbed if possible.
Thank you for that report.
