The plaintiff had knee replacement surgery that used a Zimmer knee-replacement device. Seven years later, the polyethene tibial post of the device broke, causing complications. The plaintiff filed a lawsuit against the defendant, alleging design defect, manufacturing defect, and failure-to-warn claims related to the broken tibial post. The court granted the defendant's motion for summary judgment on the failure-to-warn claim, denied the plaintiff's motion to amend the complaint as moot, and granted summary judgment against the plaintiff's design-defect claim. The most relevant facts to the court's analysis are whether the device suffered from a manufacturing defect that caused the post to break and whether the defendant provided adequate warnings to the physician.
