"The issue of South Sudan is war, after war, after war. You find that the people of South Sudan are traumatised. Mental issues have driven them far away from amongst themselves. Even you’ll find that some of the communities who were not fighting are [now] fighting each other. So they want peace. They want prayers and according to our faith, the bible, to read the word of God is number one, followed by prayer - because prayer is your communication between you and your God - then fasting and our people believe that when these holy people come, it will change a lot. And you will see a lot of people coming.”

"He was a military man, but he was also a politician. You could even have called him a diplomat, because of the way he talked, the way he did his things and the love for people - he was a people’s leader. That’s him and I can say that with all the confidence, because I lived with him and I know him. I was even jealous to see that my husband was going to free the people of South Sudan - they would deprive me of him. But I stayed back. I have been in that marginalisation. I wanted to give opportunity to my people for this good man to liberate us."

"He is somebody who I'll never forget, and I'll never see another man like him. None. None. Even if I was made a girl now, after my history with him, I could never marry."

"I wanted to - if you asked me, I'm free to talk about his legacy, what he has done. He has brought us our freedom and he told us 'I have delivered this on a golden platter.' It is for us who are alive to see what to do with it. You are the judge."

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis was expected to continue his ecumenical peace mission in South Sudan on Saturday.
The Pontiff was scheduled to lead prayers and a mass at the mausoleum of the country's liberation hero, John Garang, in Juba.
Garang's widow, Rebecca, who is Vice President of the world’s youngest country, welcomed the Pope's visit and said it signifies "change" for the country's people.
"Our people believe that when these holy people come, it will change a lot," she said in an interview ahead of the Pope's visit.
It has been racked by political and communal violence and clashes over cattle and land disputes for decades.
