১৮৮৩ থেকে ১৯০৭ সাল। সময়টা বাংলার নবজাগরণের মাঝবেলা। এই সময়ের বাঙালির ইতিহাসের এক অনন্য ছবি এঁকেছেন সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়, ‘প্রথম আলো’ উপন্যাসে। সেকালের সাহিত্য, ধর্ম, দর্শন, বিনোদন ও বিজ্ঞানের অন্দরমহলের কাহিনির মালা গেঁথেছেন লেখক। সে মালা গাঁথায় সূত্রের কাজ করেছে দুই কল্পচরিত্র, ভরত ও ভূমিসূতা। ভরতকে তিনি তুলে এনেছেন ত্রিপুরার রাজা বীরচন্দ্র মাণিক্যের অন্দরমহল থেকে। উপন্যাসের শুরুটাও সেখানেই।
