Assembly by-elections were held for the districts of Khatauli and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, Kurhani in Bihar, Padampur in Odisha, Sardarshahar in Rajasthan, and Bhanupratappur in Bihar. The Lok Sabha by-election took place in Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi Party and the BJP are engaged in a high-stakes contest to keep the seat party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. On December 8, the results of the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will also be announced. It would be interesting to see if the SP can hold onto the seat that Mulayam has won five times since 1996, including in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The opposition party, which just lost its bastion of Azamgarh, will suffer a severe loss if the BJP wins. Dimple Yadav, wife of party leader Akhilesh Yadav, is running for office with the SP. Raghuraj Singh Shakya, a longtime employee of Akhilesh's uncle Shivpal Yadav, is the BJP candidate. “Mainpuri has always been important for the Samajwadi Party. Netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) started his political journey from here,” said Dharmendra Yadav, Former MP, SP. He further stated that, “Today SP is united under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav & Shivpal Yadav to take on the BJP.”
