When photographing water birds, it is just about always best to get down to water level to photograph them. When I saw this male hooded merganser in the pond I laid down on the banks as low as I could to try to get to eye level with the bird. The merganser was preening for a little while before it went back to fishing. I was able to watch this bird catch a few fish and mollusks while I was watching it.
