It was a cold night in December when we got the call. "Hey, what do you think about rounding up a crew and driving out from Minneapolis to Tahoe in order to design a Pop-UP Park at Boreal that will only be up for 7 days?"
So that's just what we did. Casey Phlipsen, Alex Kirkland, Jesse Paul and I rented a Buick and hit the road. We were stoked with the opportunity to get out of the Twin Cities for a minute. We needed a break from the Midwest's cold streets and drip coffee to recharge our batteries.
On the highway, we stared out the window at Nebraska's never-ending expanse of nothingness and began sketching features we've always wanted to see. The Mountain Ops crew at Boreal and Woodward Tahoe had sent us photos of their rail fleet and it was like a snowboarding shopping-spree. They seriously have so many rails. Through napkin scribbles, back-and-forth texts and rest stops on the lonely highway west, we ended up with some solid ideas.
When we arrived at Boreal Mountain California and Woodward Tahoe, the weather was perfect. It had just snowed 5 feet with bluebird skies and 42 degrees is like springtime in Minnesota. The Pop-UP Park was even better than we had imagined. MizL and crew crushed it for us and I think the kids will be stoked. The sunset session is one I won't forget.
It's kind of crazy to me that this will only be up for 7 days, but I guess that's the genius too. You have to hustle to make it happen and shred it before it's gone.
