The violent death of George Floyd in the United States, under the knee of a white police officer, sparked outrage across Europe. Many there see parallels between what happened to him and their own experiences with authorities at home. Racism, racial profiling and police brutality are all realities for black people and other minorities in Europe. Though fatal encounters with police officers aren't as frequent as in the US, experts say European police are by no means innocent of excessive violence or racial bias. Cases of racial violence by police and a lack of punishment are often attributed to institutional racism. The killing of George Floyd has energized the debate about anti-racism efforts in Europe, where societies usually fail to admit that inequality exists.
