Richard Childress claims final lap ruling has 'changed NASCAR forever
Richard Childress spoke out about the punishment faced by the team and Austin Dillon after his controversial win at Richmond
Richard Childress has further addressed the controversy surrounding Austin Dillon's win at Richmond in mid-August. The 78-year-old explained how NASCAR's response to Dillon's win - specifically, how he obtained the win by hitting Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin - has radically changed how drivers approach the final lap.
As a former race car driver, Childress understands what it takes to win and how drivers should conduct themselves in the final lap. However, because of how Dillon was penalized for what he believed to be a regular attempt to win, Childress believes other drivers will be more conservative in their approach.
"Their ruling has changed NASCAR racing on the final lap forever," he said, per FOX Sports. "The drivers now, they know where the line is or they think they do, they don't. If you go in a car length and two-three quarters was exactly how far back he [Dillon] was and the other car slows down three miles an hour on the last lap, you're going to bump in little to get up at the racetrack, is that over now?

"What is the line? And then if you go to racing somebody off the corner and they get loose and they get into you, does that mean you're out of the chase? That's all I got to say about the ruling, but it has changed racing for a win, for sure."
The NASCAR Hall of Famer also noted how he didn't know whether the contact between Dillon and both Logano and Hamlin exacerbated the issue. However, he did add it would have been difficult for Richard Childress Racing (RCR) to fight NASCAR's ruling.
What's more, Childress noted how RCR was fined an incredible amount for what transpired at Richmond. "Over a million dollars to us is what it boiled down - the largest fine ever in NASCAR," Childress continued.
"I'm just disappointed, disappointed, disappointed. That's all I can say. When I write my book, that will be a chapter in it. On second thought, I might write a second and publish. It'll be 60 years in NASCAR after I'm gone."
