The perception that the blobfish looks sad is largely due to its appearance when it's brought to the surface from its deep-sea habitat. The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a deep-sea fish that lives in the cold, high-pressure waters off the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. In its natural habitat, which can be depths of up to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters), the blobfish's body is adapted to the extreme pressure of the deep ocean.

However, when the blobfish is caught in fishing nets and brought to the surface, the sudden change in pressure causes its body to lose its natural shape. In its deep-sea environment, the blobfish has a gelatinous, less dense body that allows it to float neutrally in the high-pressure waters. When it's brought to the surface, its body decompresses, and it takes on a more "blob-like" appearance, which often appears droopy and somewhat sad.

The perception of the blobfish as sad-looking has been popularized through photographs taken when the fish is out of its natural environment. It's important to note that the blobfish's appearance is a result of its unique adaptations to its deep-sea habitat and the effects of pressure changes.
