White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday, amid prospects for a return of Iranian crude oil to global markets, that the discussions taking place with Iran are to prevent the country from acquiring a nuclear weapon and they were getting closer to a deal.
Regarding Russia, she also said despite demanding a guarantee sanctions would not prevent them from trading with Iran, it was not "in (Russia's) interest" for Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.
Iran Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh also said during a press conference that a deal could be reached in "the shortest time" with the U.S. approval of Iran's stance, adding it also relies on the U.S. to "fulfill their commitments this time and not back out on the night of implementation."
He also said the requests by Washington to have direct talks would only "make sense" once Iran knew the reason for said talks.
