Guarding the stormy western entrance to Bass Strait is a lonely, rugged island. Situated at 144° longitude and 40° latitude, this isolated place is cut off from the rest of the world by jagged reefs, raging seas and howling Roaring Forties winds. Welcome to King Island.
In the 1800s its wild beaches were strewn with the flotsam and jetsam of countless tragic shipwrecks. Amongst the wreckage were straw mattresses filled with grass seeds from France and England. Legend has it that these seeds germinated in the mineral rich soil to create the lush pastures that now cover this island all year round.
Today the herds that graze on these pristine, wind-swept pastures produce some of the richest and sweetest milk in the world.
This coveted milk is sent straight from the milking sheds to our King Island Dairy where our cheese makers craft a world-class and award winning selection of specialty cheeses.
King Island lies in the middle of the Great Southern Ocean off the north-western tip of the main island of Tasmania. It's one of the world's cleanest and most natural environments with mineral-rich soils, cool annual temperatures, abundant rainfall and a consistent salt spray thanks to the constant westerly winds. This combination of micro-climate, soils and topography is what is known as 'terroir'.
The King Island terroir creates an environment for quality milk production unlike anywhere else on earth. And this high quality milk along with the expertise and craft of our cheesemakers is what makes our exclusive Black cheese range so special.
