Gambia has been commemorating the 1994 coup led by the current President Yahya Jammeh. 22 years ago, on July 22nd President Yahya toppled the party of the country's founding President Dawda Jabara on allegations of corruption and overstaying in power. Since then, this day has been celebrated in Gambia as one of the most important days on the national calendar. Celebrations take place across the country, with the President calling on citizens to reflect on the history of the country. This year's theme focused on building the capacities of women and youth.
