STORYLINE:
In Ahmadabad, authorities lifted curfew in some parts of the city of 3.5 million people, as army soldiers enforced a fearful peace in larger cities throughout the state.
The curfew was imposed in after four days of Hindu-Muslim violence in Gujurat province.
Soldiers - with orders to shoot rioters on sight - fanned out in the cities of Ahmadabad, Baroda and Rajkot and other 37 towns across the state.
Government officials insisted the situation was under control, even though district police officers told The Associated Press of widespread burning, stabbings and shootings in outlying towns.
The state police control room said Sunday the death toll in four days of clashes is 427, including 73 in police firing and 354 in arson attacks. Two policemen were among those killed.
The additional 58 deaths in the train fire brings the total number killed to 485.
