BBC documentary on Gujarat riots: UK PM Rishi Sunak supports PM Modi | Dt Next
YouTube has removed the documentary from its site after the union government expressed strong opposition to the BBC documentary on the Gujarat riots. The BBC has produced a documentary on the Gujarat riots of 2002, in relation to then Chief Minister Narendra Modi. It is said to look at the tension between Modi and the Muslim minority and insist on investigating Modi's role in the riots.
Terming the BBC documentary, a "propaganda piece" meant to push a "discredited narrative", foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said a "bias", "lack of objectivity", and "continuing colonial mindset" is "blatantly visible" in it.
The BBC said the documentary was "rigorously researched" and involved a "wide range" of voices and opinions, including responses from people in Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said media reports.
On the other hand, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak supports Prime Minister Modi in the documentary controversy.
In the documentary, it was mentioned that the UK government was aware of Modi's direct connection with the Gujarat riots. While India objected to this documentary, a Pakistani-origin MP Imran Hussain spoke about this in the UK Parliament. Responding to that, Rishi Sunak expressed his support for Prime Minister Modi by saying that he is a gentleman and that he cannot agree with all the comments made about a gentleman.
