이스라엘, 헤즈볼라 시설 산발적 공격 지속… 반쪽 휴전
Welcome to Within The Frame, where we bring today's most pressing issues across the globe, I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
A breakthrough ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect last week after 13 months of intense clashes along the Israeli-Lebanon border.
Under the agreement, Israel is set to withdraw its forces from Lebanon for over 60 days, with the Lebanese army taking control of border areas to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its infrastructure.
The U.S. and France have pledged to ensure full implementation of the ceasefire.
However, despite the deal, Israel's military confirmed airstrikes in southern Lebanon over the weekend, citing efforts to prevent ceasefire violations by Hezbollah.
French diplomats have reported at least 52 separate incidents of Israeli violations.
Meanwhile, Israel has escalated its offensive in Gaza, with CNN reporting at least 200 casualties on Saturday, raising concerns over the stability of the ceasefire and the broader regional situation.
For a deeper look into the situation, we're joined by Robert Lawrence, Assistant Professor at Dongduk Women's University. Welcome to the program, Professor.
Seunghoon Paik, Researcher at the Institute of Middle East Studies. Great to have you, Dr. Paik.
1. (Gouda) Let's start with Professor Gouda, so the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, was unexpectedly reached last week. What are the key factors behind the agreement after a year-long battle? Was there internal pressure on both sides, and did U.S. pressure play a role?
2. (Paik) Now to Dr. Paik, ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas had failed repeatedly in the past. What are the core terms of the ceasefire agreement this time, which both sides have agreed to?
3. (Gouda) In this agreement, Hezbollah's initial condition for a Gaza ceasefire was excluded, while Israel’s demand for the right to conduct military operations in Lebanon was acknowledged. Some argue that the agreement is more favorable to Israel. How do you assess this, Professor Gouda?
4. (Paik) Some analysts suggest that the 60-day ceasefire might just be a break before a longer conflict. What are your thoughts on this Dr. Paik?
5. (Gouda) Following the announcement of the ceasefire with Hezbollah, there has been a strong backlash within Israel. What is the mood inside Israel, and what are the reasons for this opposition Professor?
6. (Gouda) Despite the ceasefire agreement, Israel and Hezbollah continue sporadic airstrikes.
Both sides are accusing each other of violating the ceasefire. Professor, shat is the likelihood of a resumption of conflict during the ceasefire? What are the potential variables?
7. (Paik) After the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, Hamas also expressed its readiness to negotiate a ceasefire with Israel. What is the likelihood of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas Dr. Paik?
8. (Gouda) Some analysts speculate that after the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, Israel might escalate its operations in Gaza, and it looks like it is. How do you see the prospects, Professor Gouda?
9. (Paik) Mike Waltz, nominee for U.S. National Security Advisor, has stated that it’s time to focus on "true stability in the Middle East," rather than a quick end to the Gaza war. Dr. Paik, How should this be interpreted? What can we expect from U.S. Middle East policy under a second Trump administration?
10. (Gouda) The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is likely to have significant implications for surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Professor, how have the regional players reacted, and how might this affect the broader Middle Eastern geopolitical situation?
11. (Paik) How do you think the recent developments will influence the long-term prospects for peace between Israel and Lebanon, given that Hezbollah’s military power continues to challenge Israel’s dominance?
We'll have to leave our discussion right here, many thanks to Professor Lawrence and Dr. Paik for sharing your expertise, we appreciate it.
