This is a backstrap weaving foot loom (or so-called box loom) of the Austronesian Atayal people on Taiwan. Many other ethnic groups on Taiwan use such a trunk loom, but each differs slightly from each other. Early types of these box looms have been made by wooden trunks. The tribes on Taiwan don‘t know a shed roll like we use here, but a twig-shaped warp divider. Even their heddle bar is twig-shaped. We call this a kind of advanced foot loom, because the box, that is actually the warp beam, rests on two small rails, so doesn‘t have to be hold up by foot while weaving. Similar to the Phang Thak loom of Bhutan the Atayal Box loom produces a triangular shape into its circular warp‘s leading, just in smaller size.
